The major Janmashtami is observed on September 4, 2026. As per Panchang calculations, Krishna Paksha Ashtami Tithi begins at about 2:25 AM on September 4 and ends at 12:13 AM on September 5. Rohini Nakshatra is an important part of the festival as well, and is present most of September 4.

These dates are the reason behind the appearance of September 5 in the calendar of Janmashtami. The main date of Janmashtami is September 4, but the Lord Krishna birthday takes place at midnight.

Janmashtami 2026 Nishita Kaal and Puja Muhurat

The most important puja of Janmashtami is done in Nishita Kaal which is generally the midnight time when Krishna was born.

The exact Nishita Puja Muhurat for New Delhi will be somewhere around 11:57 PM on September 4 and 12:43 AM on September 5. However, the exact timing depends upon the place, hence one should refer to the local Panchang before doing the ritual.

In the midnight puja, the devotees perform bathing and dressing of the Krishna deity, bhog offering, aarti singing, and devotionals songs singing.

Janmashtami 2026 Fasting and Parana

Devotees often undertake a fast during Janmashtami and do the core worship on midnight. There could be different fasting customs, depending on family traditions and sampradaya.

Parana time, that is the time for breaking the fast, too depends on the calculations from the corresponding Panchang. In the case of New Delhi, as per Drik Panchang, devotees can break the fast after 6:01 AM on September 5, as long as the necessary tithi and nakshatra period have elapsed.
