The ninth edition of the Joint Military exercise, known as Exercise MITRA SHAKTI-2023, kicked off in Aundh (Pune). Running from November 16th to 29th, 2023, the exercise aims to strengthen cooperation between the Indian and Sri Lankan military forces. Exercise MITRA SHAKTI-2023 represents a significant step in promoting collaboration and understanding between India and Sri Lanka. It emphasizes the importance of joint military efforts and modern techniques in addressing challenges, ultimately contributing to regional security and stability.
The Indian contingent, consisting of 120 personnel, primarily comprises troops from the MARATHA LIGHT INFANTRY Regiment. On the Sri Lankan side, personnel from the 53 Infantry Division are representing their country. Additionally, 15 members from the Indian Air Force and five from the Sri Lankan Air Force are taking part in the exercise.
The primary goal of Exercise MITRA SHAKTI-2023 is to practice Sub Conventional operations under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The focus includes enhancing joint responses during counter-terrorist operations. Tactical actions like raid missions, search and destroy operations, heliborne activities, and more will be rehearsed. The exercise curriculum also includes Army Martial Arts Routine (AMAR), combat reflex shooting, and Yoga.
Exercise MITRA SHAKTI-2023 will feature the use of Drones and Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems, along with helicopters. The troops will practice securing helipads and performing casualty evacuations during counter-terrorist operations. The collective efforts aim to improve interoperability, reduce risks, and prioritize the UN’s interests during peacekeeping operations.
The exercise provides a platform for both sides to share views and practices related to combat skills. This mutual learning experience fosters a stronger understanding between the Indian Army and the Sri Lankan Army. The sharing of best practices not only enhances defense cooperation but also strengthens bilateral relations between the two neighboring nations.
