Kaizad Bharucha to Exit HDFC Bank on December 31, 2026, After Three Decades
Kaizad Bharucha, the Deputy Managing Director of HDFC Bank, is scheduled to step down from the private bank at the end of 2026 following a tenure of more than three decades with the bank. In an announcement on the stock exchange, HDFC Bank stated that its Governance, Nomination, and Remuneration Committee and the board have approved his resignation subject to Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) approval. The RBI had also nominated Bharucha for the MD/CEO role; however, Anup Bagchi was appointed MD/CEO for a period of three years.
Kaizad Bharucha is an experienced Indian banker who has been with HDFC Bank since October 1995 when the bank was incorporated. Bharucha has spent more than three decades with the bank and has held important roles in the company with regards to corporate, wholesale, and select retail banking operations.
Key highlights of his career path include,
Bharucha was especially known for developing the credit structure of the bank, including the framework for analyzing borrowers, evaluating credit risks, and taking lending decisions.
He was regarded as one of the architects of such a system by the HDFC Bank board, which considers it one of the hallmarks of the organization. Moreover, Bharucha made significant contributions to the corporate loan portfolio of the bank and continues working in the field of wholesale banking.
The exit of Bharucha is related to a major leadership change that takes place at HDFC Bank. Its board nominated him to the positions of the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
Nonetheless, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) appointed Anup Bagchi, who previously worked in the ICICI Group and ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, for a three-year term starting from October 27, 2026.
The request of Bharucha to leave the organization was approved by the Governance, Nomination and Remuneration Committee of HDFC Bank on October 16 and by its board on October 17, 2026. Such a request is pending RBI approval.
