Karnataka Rolls Out Rs 4 Lakh Insurance Cover To Gig Workers

In a significant move aimed at safeguarding the interests and well-being of platform-based gig workers, the Karnataka government unveiled a groundbreaking initiative that offers a comprehensive insurance package worth Rs 4 lakh, including Rs 2 lakh in life insurance and an additional Rs 2 lakh in accidental insurance. This monumental step is expected to benefit approximately 2.3 lakh gig workers who are actively engaged with various platforms like Swiggy, Zomato, and leading e-commerce giants such as Amazon, Flipkart, and BigBasket, among others.

The Karnataka State Gig Workers Insurance Scheme

The newly introduced initiative, aptly named the ‘Karnataka State Gig Workers Insurance Scheme,’ is set to be implemented with immediate effect through the Karnataka State Unorganised Workers’ Social Security Board. The scheme represents a fulfillment of the 2023-24 budgetary announcement made by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Its primary objective is to provide essential social security to workers under labor laws, a long-awaited measure that has been warmly received by gig workers throughout the state.

One of the most commendable aspects of this scheme is that the entire financial burden will be borne by the government, ensuring that gig workers can access much-needed protection without worrying about financial constraints. The primary source of finance for this initiative includes grants from both the state and central governments, subject to availability.

Coverage and Benefits

Under the Karnataka State Gig Workers Insurance Scheme, gig workers can avail themselves of a range of benefits. Hospital expenses of up to Rs 1 lakh will be reimbursed in cases of accidents, whether they occur on or off duty. However, it’s important to note that these benefits are exclusively applicable to active workers. Eligible individuals must submit their applications within one year of the accident or death.

A Boon for Gig Workers

This initiative is undeniably a breakthrough for gig workers, who often put their lives at risk while delivering goods and services. Although the state labor department lacks precise data on the number of gig workers, the Centre’s Niti Aayog has supplied the necessary information, underscoring the urgency of this social security initiative.

To benefit from this scheme, gig workers must be registered on the government’s official web portal. Moreover, the legal heirs of beneficiaries and siblings of unmarried workers are eligible for compensation. These individuals can conveniently apply for benefits directly through the Seva Sindhu portal, provided they have the necessary documents, including the E-Labor Identity Card number.
