Kerala Launches Cyber Safety Protocol 2026 for Students
Kerala has introduced the Cyber Safety Protocol 2026. Which is a comprehensive framework aimed at protecting students in the evolving Artificial Intelligence (AI) era. This initiative has been developed by Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE). And the technology wing of the state’s General Education Department. This Cyber Safety Protocol 2026 is designed to create the safe digital learning environment in Kerala’s public schools. The framework focuses on strengthening cyber security, protecting student privacy.
The Cyber Safety Protocol 2026 has been developed after analyzing emerging cyber threats linked with artificial intelligence and digital platforms. This framework addressed new risks such as AI-generated misinformation, deepfakes, digital grooming and cyber fraud.
State Officials stated that the protocol aligns with existing Indian legal frameworks to ensure safe and responsible digital practices. By combining cyber security awareness and digital literacy the Kerala Cyber Safety Protocol 2026 will aims to strengthen students ability to safely navigate the online world.
This Cyber Safety Protocol 2026 includes 13 major objectives that guide digital safety practices within schools. These objectives will focus on improving awareness and responsible digital behaviour among students and educators.
Some key objectives include helping students understand the risks of sharing personal information with Generative AI tool. Also the identifying misinformation online and promoting responsible digital citizenship. This framework also encourages critical thinking skills so students can verify online information before trusting or sharing it.
Under the Cyber Safety Protocol 2026 the school authorities are required to follow several operational guidelines to ensure safe digital education environments. School heads are assigned 17 specific responsibilities to maintain cyber safety standards within institutions.
Schools must provide teacher supervised internet access during school hours and establish dedicated School Cyber Security Committees led by a coordinator. These committees will monitor digital activities and guide students on safe internet use and address cyber security concerns within the school system.
A major feature of the Cyber Safety Protocol 2026 is its strong emphasis on protecting student privacy. The framework adopts “Privacy by Design” principles which will require institutions to safeguard personal data from misuse.
The protocol specifically discourages real time CCTV monitoring through private servers inside classrooms to protect student privacy. It also prohibits teachers from collecting sensitive student information through social media platforms or using unverified online data during classroom instruction.
The Kerala Cyber Safety Protocol 2026 also provides the detailed guidelines for students and parents to ensure safe digital practices beyond the classroom. Students receive 25 cyber safety guidelines that help them identify suspicious links, protect personal data. Along with this also to manage privacy settings in gaming or social media platforms.
Parents are given 16 practical recommendations related to screen time management, digital footprint awareness. And the use of monitoring tools such as parental control applications. These measures aim to create a cooperative approach between schools and families for safer digital environments.
The Cyber Safety Protocol 2026 is supported by several Indian laws related to digital safety and child protection. These legal frameworks provide the foundation for enforcing cyber safety measures within educational institutions.
The protocol incorporates provisions from the Information Technology Act 2000, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 and the POCSO Act. It also considers updated 2026 IT rules related to Synthetically Generated Information (SGI) to address AI-generated digital content.
