Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), in collaboration with the Department of Sports, has introduced significant reforms in the recruitment, promotion, and incentive mechanisms for athletes. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to nurturing sporting talent and turning sports into a lucrative career option.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, has announced that medal winners at the Khelo India Games—spanning Youth, University, Para, and Winter categories—are now eligible for government jobs. This development aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji’s vision of creating a robust sports ecosystem in the country and providing young athletes with a secure and promising career path.
The updated guidelines, effective from a memorandum issued on March 4, are designed to offer enhanced incentives, transparency, and inclusivity. For the first time, athletes excelling in the Khelo India Games and those achieving in events organized by the School Games Federation of India will qualify for government employment opportunities. This progressive move ensures a wider recognition of sporting excellence across various disciplines, including both traditional sports and emerging areas such as chess.
The reforms introduce a structured hierarchy based on sporting achievements, with clear criteria established for eligibility in government jobs. This includes athletes who have represented the nation or state in international or national events, as well as those who have demonstrated success in junior national tournaments. The inclusion of chess competitions at national and international levels marks a significant step towards recognizing the intellectual sport within the government’s employment framework.
To facilitate the seamless integration of eligible sportspersons into government roles, the roster of authorized entities empowered to issue certificates validating athletes’ eligibility has been expanded. This includes Secretaries of National Sports Federations for international events, Secretaries of State Associations for national competitions, and Deans or Sports Officers of Universities for inter-University tournaments, among others.
Highlighting the importance of the Khelo India initiative, the games have been officially recognized as events of national significance. This acknowledgment not only elevates the stature of Khelo India Games but also opens up new avenues for athletes to secure their future through government employment, further incentivizing their participation and performance.
