LA28 Olympics Cricket Qualification Explained: Qualified Teams, Rules and Road to Los Angeles 2028

As Cricket makes return to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028 (LA28), the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the official qualification pathway for the men’s and women’s T20 tournaments. Total six team competitions will be decided through the combination of ICC global events, T20I rankings, host qualification criteria and a newly introduced the ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027. On the other side four women’s teams have already secured their places.

Cricket Returns to the Olympics

Cricket will make the its long-awaited Olympic comeback at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and it marks its first appearance since the 1900 Paris Games.

Both the men’s and women’s events will be played in the T20 format and total six teams will be competing in each tournament.

To ensure the fair representation while maintaining competitive standards, the ICC has designed the qualification system which combines continental representation, world rankings and a final qualifying tournament.

Which Teams Have Already Qualified?

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has produced the first four Olympic qualifiers.

The qualified women’s teams are the,

• Australia (Oceania)
• Great Britain (through England) (Europe)
• India (Asia)
• South Africa (Africa)

Only one nation from the each continent could secure the automatic qualification through the Women’s T20 World Cup so making regional performance crucial.

At present, there is no men’s team has officially qualified for the LA28 Olympics.

How Will the Remaining Women’s Teams Qualify?

Two spots remain available in the women’s competition.

The United States as the host nation, will qualify automatically if it reaches the top 15 of the ICC Women’s T20I Rankings at the any time between June 30 and December 31, 2026.

If the USA fails to achieve this decided ranking, the host quota will instead go to the highest-ranked eligible non-qualified team as of March 1, 2027.

The sixth and final berth will be decided through the ICC Olympics Qualifier of 2027.

Men’s Qualification Pathway Explained

Unlike the women’s event, qualification for the men’s tournament will primarily depend on the ICC Men’s T20I rankings.

Four automatic places will be awarded to the highest-ranked eligible teams from the,

• Africa
• Asia
• Europe
• Oceania

The rankings will be considered as of December 31, 2026.

The USA can also qualify as the host nation if it enters to the top 15 of the ICC Men’s T20I Rankings during the qualification period.

If it fails to meet this requirement, the automatic place will pass to the next highest-ranked eligible team, regardless of their continent.

The final Olympic spot will again be decided through the ICC Olympics Qualifier of 2027.

What Is the ICC Olympics Qualifier?

For the first time, the ICC will organize the dedicated Olympic Qualification Tournament in the year 2027.

The tournament will features the,

• Eight men’s teams
• Eight women’s teams

The participating teams will be the highest-ranked nations that have not already qualified for the LA28. The winners will secure the final Olympic berths.

The ICC is yet to announce the tournament’s venue, schedule and the competition format.

Why Can’t the West Indies Compete as One Team?

One of the most discussed aspects of the qualification system is the absence of the West Indies as a single Olympic team.

Unlike the ICC tournaments, the Olympics recognize only the National Olympic Committees (NOCs).

As the West Indies represents the several Caribbean nations rather than one recognized NOC, they cannot participate collectively.

If the West Indies finish among the highest-ranked non-qualified teams, the ICC will organize the Caribbean Qualifier to determine which individual Caribbean nation will represent the region in the ICC Olympics Qualifier.

Tournament Format for LA28 Cricket

Both the men’s and women’s Olympic cricket competitions will feature the,

Six teams in each event

• 15-player squads
• Two groups of three teams

Each team will play total,

• Two group-stage matches
• Two crossover matches against teams from the opposite group

The top two teams will compete for the gold medal, while the third- and fourth-placed teams will fight for the bronze medal.

Around 28 matches will be played across the both tournaments at the purpose-built cricket venue in the Pomona, Los Angeles.
