The Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti 2026 will be celebrated on October 2nd which is the 122nd birthday of the late Indian Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri. He was born on October 2, 1904, in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh, India, and later emerged as India’s Prime Minister during a very crucial time after the demise of Jawaharlal Nehru. Shastri held the office of the Prime Minister from June 9, 1964, until the January 11, 1966. During his time in power, India fought a war against Pakistan in 1965, faced food shortages, and took steps to increase agriculture production.

Who was Lal Bahadur Shastri?

He was born into a poor family in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh, on October 2, 1904, Shastri grew up under the care of his mother since his father, Sharada Prasad Srivastava, passed away at a very young age.

Lal Bahadur Shastri came in contact with India’s struggle for independence during his youth. Under the influence of Mahatma Gandhi, he joined the national struggle and was put behind bars by the British government many times.

He got education in the Kashi Vidya Peeth, Varanasi, and was conferred the title of “Shastri” (scholar).

Role of Lal Bahadur Shastri in the Freedom Struggle

Shastri became part of the freedom movement during his early years and participated in different movements against the British regime. In answer to the call made by Mahatma Gandhi during the Non-Cooperation Movement, he quit his studies to join the national movement.

As per the biography of the Prime Minister, Shastri remained for seven years in the British jails during the freedom movement.

After the independence of India, he came into public administration and politics and gradually rose from provincial work to national level.

Political Career of Lal Bahadur Shastri Post Independence

Shastri played a number of important roles in Uttar Pradesh post Independence period prior to joining the Union Cabinet.

In the central government, he played a very important role and was part of some very important ministries, such as Railways and Transport, Transport and Communications, Commerce and Industry, and Home Ministry.

One example where Shastri’s acceptance of ministerial responsibility comes out prominently is his resignation as Railway Minister after a huge railway accident.

When Did Lal Bahadur Shastri Become Prime Minister?

Lal Bahadur Shastri became the Prime Minister of India on June 9, 1964, following the death of Jawaharlal Nehru.

His period in office continued for around 19 months until his death on January 11, 1966.

Lal Bahadur Shastri is often considered as the second Prime Minister of the India. However, as per the Prime Minister’s Museum & Library, Gulzarilal Nanda served as the interim Prime Minister after the demise of Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri. Shastri was thus the second regular Prime Minister of India.

What Does “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” Mean?

The slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” is best known as the slogan used by Lal Bahadur Shastri.

This slogan emphasized the significance of soldiers and farmers in the national security and food security of the country. The slogan gained popularity in a time when India had to face the 1965 war and food shortages in the country.

Shastri favored policies related to agricultural productivity as well as food security in India. His period of service was marked by the laying down of the institutional framework for the green revolution as well as milk production.
