Launch of India’s First Indigenous Multi-Purpose Vessel ‘Samarthak’
On October 14, 2024, the Indian Navy marked a significant milestone with the launch of the first ship, ‘Samarthak,’ under the Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) project at L&T Shipyard in Kattupalli, Chennai. The vessel was launched by Shashi Tripathi, President of the Navy Welfare and Wellness Association, and the ceremony was presided over by Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of Naval Staff. This launch reflects the Indian Navy’s commitment to indigenous shipbuilding, aligning with the Government of India’s vision for ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India.’
The contract for the construction of two MPVs was signed between the Ministry of Defence and L&T Shipyard on March 25, 2022. This project aims to enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy by utilizing advanced indigenous technologies.
The MPV, measuring 106 meters in length and 16.8 meters in width, can achieve a maximum speed of 15 knots. It is designed for multiple roles, including towing ships, launching and recovering targets, operating uncrewed autonomous vehicles, and serving as a trial platform for various indigenous weapons and sensors currently under development.
The launch of ‘Samarthak’ underscores the Indian Navy’s dedication to advancing indigenous shipbuilding, showcasing collaboration with a private shipyard to bolster domestic manufacturing and enhance national security capabilities.
