Delhi, the capital of India, has had several Chief Ministers (CMs) since 1952. The CM is the head of the Delhi government and looks after the city’s administration. From 1956 to 1993, Delhi was under central government rule. After that, the position of CM was restored. The Chief Minister of Delhi is the head of the government, responsible for running the administration. The first state assembly elections were held in 1952, and Chaudhary Brahm Prakash became the first Chief Minister. Over the years, many leaders from different political parties have served as Chief Ministers of Delhi.
The first Chief Minister of Delhi Chaudhary Brahm Prakash from the Indian National Congress (INC). He served from March 17, 1952 to February 12, 1955. After him, Gurmukh Nihal Singh became the Chief Minister, but on November 1, 1956, Delhi lost its statehood, and there was no Chief Minister for many years.

Rekha Gupta became the Chief Minister of Delhi on 20 February 2025, becoming the fourth woman to hold this position. A leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), she represents the Shalimar Bagh constituency as an MLA. Before becoming Chief Minister, she held key roles in BJP’s Delhi unit and served as General Secretary and President of the Delhi University Students Union. She has been actively involved in politics and party leadership for many years.
Delhi has had several Chief Ministers from different parties since 1952. The first was Chaudhary Brahm Prakash (INC). Sheila Dikshit (INC) served the longest, while Arvind Kejriwal (AAP) won multiple terms. BJP also led Delhi under Madan Lal Khurana and others.
