List of Countries Accepting RuPay Cards Internationally

RuPay (short for “Rupee + Payment”) is India’s domestic card scheme launched by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India). It was created as a homegrown alternative to Visa and Mastercard with the aim of reducing transaction costs, boosting financial inclusion, and giving India control over its payments infrastructure.

Today, RuPay is accepted widely in India — from local tea stalls to metro stations. But in recent years, it has started making its presence felt internationally as well.

How Does RuPay Work Globally?

RuPay’s global push is driven by international tie-ups. Not all RuPay cards work abroad, only RuPay Global or co-branded international cards can be used overseas. These are linked with international payment networks such as:

  • Discover and Diners Club – Covers over 185 countries, giving RuPay access to ATMs and merchant terminals.
  • JCB (Japan Credit Bureau) – Strong presence across Asia and several other regions.
  • UnionPay – Particularly strong in China and Europe.

Through these tie-ups, RuPay cardholders can use their cards in multiple countries for ATM withdrawals, shopping, dining, and online purchases.

Countries Accepting RuPay Cards (Highlights till 2025)

While RuPay technically works in 200+ countries through Discover and JCB networks, the direct partnerships and official launches are most significant. These ensure smoother acceptance and fewer issues for travelers.

Here are key countries where RuPay has been launched with dedicated infrastructure:

  • Bhutan (2017): First international adopter; easy payments at border shops and ATMs via Bhutan National Bank.
  • Singapore (2018): Linked with NETS system, accepted at over 33,000 points.
  • UAE (2019): Accepted in Dubai malls and Abu Dhabi ATMs; low-cost remittances through Al Etihad Payments.
  • Bahrain (2020): 500+ ATMs and 40,000 POS machines enabled via BENEFIT.
  • Nepal (2022): Works at major markets and hotels; useful for pilgrims and trekkers.
  • Mauritius (2024): Launched recently; also linked with UPI for QR payments.
  • Sri Lanka (2024): Accepted at Colombo and Kandy merchants; beneficial for tourists.
  • Maldives (2024): Useful for resort payments and seaplane rides.
  • Oman (2025): Introduced in early 2025; usable in Muscat and Salalah.
  • Qatar (2025): Expanding in Doha; over 60 merchants already on board.

On the Horizon

NPCI is working on expanding RuPay acceptance in Europe (France, Switzerland, Benelux countries), Malaysia, Thailand, and even the United States. Saudi Arabia is also in discussions to roll out RuPay for Hajj pilgrims.

Why Use RuPay Abroad?

  1. Lower Fees: Often up to 50% cheaper than Visa or Mastercard.
  2. Wide Reach: Accepted at ATMs, POS machines, and for e-commerce.
  3. UPI Integration: In some countries, RuPay can be linked to UPI for QR code payments.
  4. Extra Perks: Lounge access, cashback, and travel insurance on premium RuPay Select cards.
  5. Secure & Contactless: EMV chip and tap-to-pay technology ensure safe, quick transactions.

In 2024 alone, international RuPay transactions saw nearly 40% growth, supported by more than 750 million RuPay cards issued in India.

How to Use RuPay Internationally

  • Check Card Type: Ensure it is a RuPay Global card (from banks like SBI, HDFC, BoB).
  • Enable International Use: Activate the feature via bank app or net banking.
  • At ATMs & POS: Look for Discover or JCB logos. Expect fees of ₹100–250 plus a forex markup.
  • For Online Shopping: Works on select global e-commerce sites.
  • Carry a Backup: Always keep a Visa/Mastercard as a fallback in case RuPay is not accepted everywhere.

The Future of RuPay

With NPCI International Payments Limited leading global expansion, RuPay is expected to enter more countries by late 2025. Tied closely to India’s Digital India mission and Prime Minister Modi’s economic diplomacy, RuPay aims to establish itself as a trusted Indian brand abroad.

By the end of 2025, RuPay’s reach could extend to at least 10 more countries in Europe, Asia, and the Gulf, making it a true global competitor to Visa and Mastercard.
