The Home Minister of India is one of the most important members of the Union Cabinet. This ministry looks after the country’s internal security, law and order, and peace within the nation. Since India’s independence in 1947, many great leaders have served as Home Ministers, each playing a vital role in maintaining unity, stability, and safety across the country.
As of November 2025, a total of 32 individuals have served as the Minister of Home Affairs of India. The position was created in 1947, soon after independence, to handle internal security, law and order, and national administration. Each Home Minister has contributed to maintaining peace and stability across the country.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was India’s first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, serving from August 15, 1947, to December 15, 1950, under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Known as the “Iron Man of India,” he united over 560 princely states into one nation, managed partition relief efforts, and restored peace. He also founded the All India Services, earning him the title “Patron Saint of India’s Civil Servants.”
Amit Anilchandra Shah is the current and 32nd Home Minister of India, serving since May 2019 — the longest tenure in India’s history. He is also the first Minister of Co-operation since July 2021 and the Member of Parliament for Gandhinagar. A close ally and key strategist of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah earlier served as BJP President (2014–2020) and Chairman of the NDA.
