The Nobel Prize in Economics is given every year to economists who have made important contributions to the study of economics. Established in 1969, this respected award honors individuals whose ideas have changed how we understand and apply economic concepts. From theory to real-world policy, these winners have greatly influenced global research, decision-making, and economic growth. Below is the complete list of laureates from 1969 to 2025.
The Nobel Prizes are five important awards given to individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to humanity. They were established by Alfred Nobel’s will in 1895, just before he passed away. The first prizes were awarded in 1901 and include categories for Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace. In 1969, a sixth prize for Economic Sciences was added, funded by Sweden’s central bank.
The Nobel Prizes are considered the highest honors in their fields. Each year, during a special ceremony, winners, called laureates, receive a gold medal, a diploma, and a cash award. As of 2023, the cash prize is about 11 million Swedish kronor, or around 1,035,000 US dollars.
The prizes can only be shared by up to three people, but the Nobel Peace Prize can be given to organizations with more than three members. Generally, the prizes are not awarded posthumously, but if a person wins and passes away before the award ceremony, they will still receive the prize.
