List of world’s deadliest earthquakes since 2000

Deadly Earthquake in Turkey and Syria

Around four in the morning, one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the area in a century jolted many out of their beds. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the 7.8-magnitude earthquake’s epicentre was 24.1 kilometres (14.9 miles) beneath the surface, 23 kilometres (14.2 miles) east of Nurdagi in Turkey’s Gaziantep region.

  • On March 11, 2011, a tsunami caused by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake off the northeast coast of Japan killed more than 20,000 people.
