Lokmanya Tilak Jayanti 2026: Biography, History, Significance and Unheard Facts
India celebrates Lokmanya Tilak Jayanti every July 23 to pay tribute to one of the greatest leaders of the freedom movement in India, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. The year 2026 will mark 170 years since the birth of Tilak, whose courage, patriotism and far-sightedness served as an inspiration to millions of people demanding self-rule in the country. He is famous for his powerful statement saying “Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it.” Tilak brought the freedom struggle of India from the elite politicians level to the masses. His works as an educator, journalist, social reformer and patriot have left a mark on many generations of people.
Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak is one of the most renowned freedom fighters, reformers, and educationists in India.
British author Valentine Chirol refers to him as the ‘Father of Indian Unrest’ because of his unyielding attitude toward British rule.
Tilak believed that political freedom could only be attained through public involvement with self-respect and national unity. Whereas many leaders in different regions preferred filing petitions and waiting for the authorities, Tilak concentrated on leading a movement.
His daring leadership won him the greatest respect among his compatriots, so they kindly referred to him as ‘Lokmanya’ which means ‘respected by the people.’
Tilak came from a family that believed in the significance of education and Indian traditions. He was a brilliant student who scored good marks in Math and Sanskrit subjects, before earning a law degree.
Instead of leading a comfortable life as a lawyer, Tilak opted for education as a means of nation-building.
He held a view that an educated society offers the best platform for political independence.

The Leader of the Extremist Group In its early years, Indian National Congress was formed and functioned by means of petitions and constitutional methods.
Tilak was completely opposed to such a moderate line of action. Thus, he formed the well-known trio of Lal-Bal-Pal alongside Lala Lajpat Rai and Bipin Chandra Pal, becoming the representative of the extremist wing of the Congress.

Kesari (In Marathi)
The Marathi paper connected with the masses and publicised British rule through weighty editorials.
The Mahratta (In English)
This publication focused on educated people and connected Indian aspirations to local as well as global audience.
His writings often ridiculed British practices, which resulted in sedition charges and even imprisonments.
One of Tilak’s most notable accomplishments took place in 1916 when he collaborated with Annie Besant to initiate the All India Home Rule League.
The movement advocated for Indian self-rule within the framework of the British Empire.

The public Ganesh festival served as a source of patriotism and social cohesion.
4. Imprisoned Several Times
He was arrested multiple times and received a sentence in Mandalay jail (Burma) for six years.
5. Wrote Gita Rahasya in Prison
While serving his sentence in Mandalay, he wrote Gita Rahasya, where he discusses the ideas of Karma Yoga derived from the Bhagvad Gita.
6. Great Supporter of Swadeshi
