Magnus Carlsen Wins SuperUnited Chess 2025
Magnus Carlsen, the world’s top chess player, has won the SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz 2025 tournament held in Zagreb, Croatia. He secured the title on July 7, 2025, with one round to spare. The event is part of the Grand Chess Tour and brings together top chess players from around the world. This win shows Carlsen’s strong form, while India’s D Gukesh also impressed by finishing third.
The SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz is a fast-paced chess event where players compete in two formats—Rapid and Blitz. Magnus Carlsen played very well throughout and confirmed his win by drawing with India’s R Praggnanandhaa in the second-last round. He then defeated Ivan Saric of Croatia in the final round, ending with a total score of 22.5 out of 36.
Wesley So, a top player from the USA, came in second with 20 points. He had a strong final day, scoring more than Carlsen in the last 9 games of Blitz. However, it wasn’t enough to catch up.
India’s D Gukesh, who is the current World Champion, surprised many by doing well in the Rapid format, which is not usually his strong point. He struggled a bit in the Blitz games but made a good recovery in the second half, scoring 4 out of 9, and finishing with 19.5 points.
In his Blitz rematch with Carlsen, Gukesh played a Berlin defense, which led to a draw. His performance shows how quickly he is improving in faster formats, even though he is just 19 years old.
The next event in the Grand Chess Tour will be held at the Saint Louis Chess Club in Missouri, USA from August 10 to 16, 2025. This will be the fourth event of the season and another chance for top players to earn points and prepare for bigger championships. Fans can expect more exciting games and strong competition.
