About the Veer Savarkar

Veer Savarkar, also known as Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, was an Indian independence activist, writer, and politician who played a significant role in the Indian freedom struggle. He was born on May 28, 1883, in Bhagur, a village in the Nashik district of Maharashtra. He founded the concept of Hindutva, which sought to create a Hindu nationalist identity for India.

Savarkar was also a prolific writer, having authored several books, including “The Indian War of Independence 1857”, “Six Glorious Epochs of Indian History”, and “Hindutva: Who is a Hindu?”. He was one of the first Indian nationalists to call for complete independence from British rule, and he played a crucial role in the formation of the All India Forward Bloc.

However, his role in the assassination of British police officer Saunders and his subsequent imprisonment and trial at the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where he spent over a decade, have also been controversial. Despite his contributions to the Indian freedom struggle, his association with Hindutva and controversial actions have made him a polarizing figure in Indian politics and history.
