Maharashtra’s Sangli to Get Dedicated Raisin Research Centre

For a major boost for the agricultural crops like for grape and raisin farmers. From the state of Maharashtra district of Sangli will get to a dedicated raisin research centre. The proposal has been approved in principle by the Senate of Shivaji University, following a demand raised by Sangli MLA Sudhir Gadgil. The new centre aims to strengthen raisin production through scientific research, quality improvement, processing support and skill development, helping farmers and processors stay competitive in domestic and export markets.

Ned Of Raisin Research Centre

Local farmers and industry stakeholders have highlighted several challenges,

  • Growing export competition
  • Increasing imports of cheaper raisins
  • Limited access to scientific research
  • Lack of structured training and skill development
  • Need for better quality standards and value addition

A dedicated research centre is expected to address these issues in a focused manner.

Key Features of the Proposed Centre

The raisin research center will focus on,

  • Scientific research on raisin varieties and processing methods
  • Quality improvement and standardisation
  • Processing and value addition techniques
  • Skill development and training for farmers and processors
  • Support for improving global competitiveness of Indian raisins

The centre will work closely with raisin growers, processors and exporters across Maharashtra.

Role of Shivaji University

Since Sangli falls under the jurisdiction of Shivaji University, the university will establish and oversee the centre.

The university Senate has,

  • Approved the proposal in principle
  • Agreed to host the centre under its academic and research framework
  • Planned a phased rollout for smooth implementation

Phased Rollout Plan

The centre will be developed in stages.

Initial Phase

  • Operations to begin at a temporary location
  • Basic research and training activities to start early

Later Phase

  • Shift to a permanent campus
  • Recruitment of required scientific and technical staff
  • Expansion of research and outreach programmes

This approach will ensure early benefits while building long-term infrastructure.

Benefits for Farmers and Processors

Once operational, the centre is expected to,

  • Improve productivity and raisin quality
  • Help farmers meet international export standards
  • Reduce losses during processing
  • Increase farmer income
  • Strengthen Maharashtra’s position in the global raisin market

It will also encourage innovation and modernisation in the raisin value chain.

Sangli’s Importance in Raisin Production

Sangli is widely regarded as India’s grape and raisin hub. The region produces high quality grapes and raisins that are supplied across India and exported to international markets.

Despite this strong production base,

  • Maharashtra does not currently have a specialised raisin research centre
  • Farmers and processors depend largely on traditional methods
  • Rising competition from imported raisins, especially from China, has increased pressure on local producers
  • This gap in research and development support has long been a concern for growers.

Key Takeaways

  • Sangli will get Maharashtra’s dedicated raisin research centre
  • Proposal approved by the Senate of Shivaji University, Kolhapur
  • Centre aims to support raisin growers through research and training
