Olympic Glory

  • 1928 (Amsterdam): India won its first Olympic gold in hockey, with Dhyan Chand as the top scorer.
  • 1932 (Los Angeles): India defeated the USA with a record score of 24–1; Dhyan Chand and his brother Roop Singh were nicknamed the “Hockey Twins.”
  • 1936 (Berlin): India beat Germany 8–1 in the final, with Dhyan Chand scoring three goals. Adolf Hitler was so impressed that he reportedly offered him a high post in the German Army, which Dhyan Chand declined.

Later Career and Retirement

After years of success, Dhyan Chand continued serving in the Indian Army and retired as a Major in 1956. That same year, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour. After retirement, he coached young players and worked to promote hockey across the country.
