On 29 August 2025, India celebrates the 120th birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the legendary hockey player known as the “Wizard of Hockey.” Famous for his extraordinary ball control and goal-scoring skills, he won three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936, making India a hockey superpower. His birthday is observed as National Sports Day, honouring his unmatched contribution to Indian sports and inspiring generations of athletes.
Major Dhyan Chand is known as the “Wizard of Hockey” because of his magical control over the ball. He scored more than 1,000 goals in his career and won three Olympic gold medals for India in 1928, 1932, and 1936. His skills amazed the world so much that even foreign players once checked his stick to see if it had a magnet!
After years of success, Dhyan Chand continued serving in the Indian Army and retired as a Major in 1956. That same year, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour. After retirement, he coached young players and worked to promote hockey across the country.
