Major Dhyan Chand is known as the “Wizard of Hockey” because of his magical control over the ball. He scored more than 1,000 goals in his career and won three Olympic gold medals for India in 1928, 1932, and 1936. Early Life of Major Dhyan Chand

  • Born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh.
  • His father served in the British Indian Army and played hockey, which inspired young Dhyan Chand.
  • He joined the army at the age of 17 and started playing hockey seriously during his service.

Olympic Glory

  • 1928 (Amsterdam): India won its first Olympic gold in hockey, with Dhyan Chand as the top scorer.
  • 1932 (Los Angeles): India defeated the USA with a record score of 24–1; Dhyan Chand and his brother Roop Singh were nicknamed the “Hockey Twins.”
  • 1936 (Berlin): India beat Germany 8–1 in the final, with Dhyan Chand scoring three goals. Adolf Hitler was so impressed that he reportedly offered him a high post in the German Army, which Dhyan Chand declined.

Later Career and Retirement

After years of success, Dhyan Chand continued serving in the Indian Army and retired as a Major in 1956. That same year, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour. After retirement, he coached young players and worked to promote hockey across the country.

  • India’s highest sporting award, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, is named after him.
