Mary Earps, one of England’s top football goalkeepers, has decided to retire from International football. She shared this news just before England’s important matches in the UEFA Women’s Nations League. Her retirement means she will not play in the UEFA European Championship in Switzerland this summer.
Mary Earps made her first appearance for England in 2017. Since then, she has played 53 matches (called ”caps”) for the country. She was a key player when England won the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 at home and when they reached the final in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia.
Earps has won many awards during her career. These include:
She has become a role model for many young players.
With Mary Earps retired, other goalkeepers like Hannah Hampton, Khiara Keating and Anna Moorhouse will join the 26-player squad. They will play important matches against Portugal and Spain to try to reach the knockout stages of the UEFA Women’s Nations League.
England’s football team has promised to give Mary a full tribute after the summer to thank her for her amazing contribution to the sport.
