Meet 47th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff Who takes Charge

Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, AVSM, NM, took charge as the 47th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS). Following his assumption of office, he paid a solemn tribute to India’s Bravehearts by laying a floral wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, honoring those who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

A Distinguished Naval Career Spanning Over Three Decades

An alumnus of the 71st course of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Pune, Vice Admiral Vatsayan was commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1988. A specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems, he has served in a variety of command, operational, and strategic staff roles across a remarkable career of more than 37 years.

At sea, he has contributed significantly to frontline operations,

  • Served onboard the Guided Missile Destroyer INS Mysore as part of its commissioning crew.
  • Member of the pre-commissioning crew of ICGS Sangram, a Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Vessel.
  • Commanded multiple warships including INS Vibhuti, INS Nashak, INS Kuthar, and INS Sahyadri, the last of which he commanded as the Commissioning Commanding Officer.
  • In February 2020, he became the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, overseeing key deployments and exercises amid heightened maritime activity following the Galwan Valley clashes.

Since his promotion to Flag Rank in February 2018, Vice Admiral Vatsayan has,

  1. Served as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans), shaping long-term strategic initiatives.
  2. Commanded the Eastern Fleet, ensuring maritime readiness.
  3. Held the post of Deputy Commandant at the National Defence Academy, mentoring the next generation of military leaders.
  4. In December 2021, he was appointed Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command, overseeing operational preparedness and infrastructure development.
  5. Most recently, served as Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Operations) and DCIDS (Policy, Plans and Force Development) at HQ IDS, where he was instrumental in integration, jointness, force modernization, and indigenisation across the three Services.

Awards and Honors

For his exceptional leadership and meritorious service, Vice Admiral Vatsayan was conferred the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 2021. He also holds the Nao Sena Medal (NM), highlighting his distinguished contributions to India’s naval defence.
