Memorial Day is a special holiday in the United States. It is observed on the last Monday of May every year. In 2025, Memorial Day will be celebrated on May 26. Many people enjoy the long weekend, but the true meaning of the day is to remember and honour U.S. military personnel who died while serving the country.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States. It is a time for the nation to pause and reflect on the brave soldiers who lost their lives in wars. Although it also marks the unofficial start of summer, the day’s main purpose is to honour fallen heroes.
This day has two main meanings:
The most important part is the tribute to the military and their sacrifices.
Memorial Day began after the American Civil War. It was first called Decoration Day, because people decorate soldiers’ grave with flowers.
In 1868, a Union Army Leader, John A. Logan, suggested that May 30 be set aside to honour fallen soldiers.
After World War I, the day was changed to honour all U.S. military members who died in all wars, not just the Civil War. It officially became a federal holiday in 1971 and is now observed on the last Monday of May.
