In 1868, a Union Army Leader, John A. Logan, suggested that May 30 be set aside to honour fallen soldiers.

After World War I, the day was changed to honour all U.S. military members who died in all wars, not just the Civil War. It officially became a federal holiday in 1971 and is now observed on the last Monday of May.

People observe Memorial Day in many ways:

  • Laying flowers and flags at cemeteries

What is Open and Closed on Memorial Day 2025?

  • Banks Government Offices and Mail Services: Most banks, post offices, courts and government offices will be closed on May 26. The U.S. Postal Services and most FedEx and UPS delivery services will also not be available.
  • Stock Market: Both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, will be closed for Memorial Day. Trading will resume on Tuesday, May 27. The next holiday closure is for Juneteenth on June 19.
  • Retail Stores: Many stores will be open on Memorial Day to allow customers to shop before summer. Stores like Walmart, Target, Home Deport, Lowe’s, Macy’s and Kohl’s will operate but may have different hours.
  • Restaurants: Most restaurants will be open, giving people of food choices. Popular places like McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Chick-fil-A, Starbucks and Dunkin’ will serve customers. Family-friendly restaurants will also be open for dining.
