Meta Partners with IndiaAI: A Leap Towards Open Source AI Innovation

In a strategic move to bolster artificial intelligence (AI) in India, Meta has partnered with IndiaAI and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to drive open-source AI research and skill development. This collaboration includes establishing a Center for Generative AI at IIT Jodhpur and launching the “AI for Skilling and Capacity Building” initiative, aimed at empowering the youth and fostering a sustainable AI ecosystem.

Key Initiatives

Generative AI Center at IIT Jodhpur: The newly established Center for Generative AI, named Shrijan, will focus on addressing national challenges in sectors like healthcare, mobility, and education. It aims to nurture the startup ecosystem by promoting accessibility to AI resources and fostering collaboration through workshops and seminars.

AI for Skilling and Capacity Building: This initiative, part of the YuvaAI project, targets the training of 100,000 youth aged 18-30 in AI and large language models (LLMs). It includes a Gen AI Resource Hub, a dedicated course for young developers, and hackathons to encourage open-source AI applications.

Funding and Collaboration

Meta has pledged up to Rs 750 lakhs over three years for the Generative AI Center, reinforcing the commitment to developing indigenous AI applications. Collaborations with institutions such as Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya and AIIMS Jodhpur will enhance research capabilities and technology transfer to solve real-world problems.

Vision for the Future

This partnership aligns with India’s ambition to achieve a $5 trillion economy by nurturing a robust ecosystem for AI research and ethical innovation. By promoting open-source solutions, Meta and IndiaAI aim to bridge the talent gap, ensuring that India’s youth are equipped to lead in the global AI landscape. The initiative also emphasizes long-term sustainability and ongoing innovation through continuous monitoring by a joint committee from MeitY and Meta.
