Mexico Beats USA In Final to Win 10th Gold Cup
Mexico won their 10th CONCACAF Gold Cup title by defeating the United States 2-1 in a thrilling final held at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, on Sunday. The win marks back-to-back titles for Mexico and highlights their strong form ahead of the next FIFA World Cup.
The match started fast with the United States taking the lead just 4 minutes in. Sebastian Berhalter took a free-kick that found Chris Richards, who headed the ball under the crossbar and into the net. The referee confirmed it was a goal, putting the US in front early in the game.
In the 27th minute, Raul Jimenez scored the equalizer for Mexico from close range. After scoring, Jimenez held up a shirt with the name of his late teammate, Diogo Jota, in a touching tribute. Despite having several chances in the first half, Mexico couldn’t add another goal. Gilberto Mora, only 16 years old, and Roberto Alvarado both tested US goalkeeper Matt Freese, but he made strong saves.
After the break, Mexico increased their attack and finally scored the winning goal when Edson Alvarez headed the ball into the net. There was a tense moment as VAR checked for offside, but the goal was allowed. Alvarez said, “We trained hard for 35 days to win this. I’m proud and happy with the result.”
The US came close to scoring again, especially through Alex Freeman and Diego Luna, but could not find the net.
With this win, Mexico now holds 10 Gold Cup titles, the most by any country. They also won the CONCACAF Nations Championship, showing their strength in regional football. Raul Jimenez said, “It’s important to win this before the World Cup. We’ve worked hard since the start.”
