The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) recently marked International Women in Maritime Day, recognizing the significant contributions of 27 women seafarers to the maritime industry. The event aimed to honor these professionals and promote gender equality within the maritime sector.
MoPSW paid tribute to 27 women seafarers who have made notable contributions to the maritime industry, acknowledging their dedication and expertise. These women, hailing from various marine institutes and professional backgrounds, represent the growing presence of females in maritime studies and practice.
This year’s theme, ‘Safe Horizons: Women in Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety,’ underscores the pivotal role of women in ensuring safe operations and safeguarding lives at sea. It highlights their indispensable contributions to the growth and development of the maritime sector while promoting gender inclusivity and breaking down barriers within the industry.
Over the past decade, there has been a remarkable increase in the number of Indian seafarers, with a 140% rise recorded from 2014 to 2023. Specifically, the Directorate General of Shipping has witnessed a substantial surge in registered women seafarers, indicating a 514% growth during the same period. As of May 15, 2024, there are 13,371 registered women seafarers, with 4,770 actively engaged in maritime roles as of December 31, 2023.
