Mumbai Cricket Association Becomes First in India to Launch Structured Player Contract Model

Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has announced the introduction of the player contract system starting from the 2026-27 domestic season. This decision approved in the recent Apex Council meeting and which makes MCA the first state cricket association in India to implement the this type of structured remuneration model. This initiative aims to provide the financial stability to the domestic players specially for those who are not featured in high-paying leagues like the IPL or the International Cricket.

MCA Becomes First State Body to Introduce Player Contracts

The Mumbai Cricket Association has taken foundational step by introducing the annual player contracts with the graded salary structure. This reform is expected to reshape how the domestic cricketers are supported financially across the India.

The contract system will also categorize players into three grades,

  • Grade A: ₹12 lakh to ₹20 lakh per annum
  • Grade B: ₹8 lakh to ₹12 lakh per annum
  • Grade C: ₹8 lakh per annum

This structured payment model will ensures that consistent performers at the domestic level will receive the assured income and recognition and will reduce the dependence on the external thing.

Why This Move Matters for Indian Domestic Cricket

The decision holds the importance in the broader view of Indian domestic cricket development.

Many young and senior talented players representing Mumbai often miss out the opportunities in the Indian Premier League (IPL) which is known for the lucrative contracts.

Speaking on the development MCA President Ajinkya Naik highlighted that this system is designed to support the players who consistently perform across the formats but they lack exposure to the high-paying platforms.

This initiative will provides financial security to non-IPL players and also encourages players to focus on long-format and domestic cricket.

Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Avail the Contracts?

To maintain the fairness and target genuine domestic talent MCA has set the specific eligibility guidelines for players seeking contracts.

Players must have to,

  • Be registered with MCA
  • They have to meet the minimum fitness standards set by the association
  • Also they should not have represented India in any format in the last two seasons
  • Mainly the not have been part of any IPL team in the last two seasons
  • Also to be recommended by the selection committee

These conditions have ensure that the scheme will benefits the dedicated domestic performers rather than already established international or IPL players.

Salary Structure and Financial Implications

The introduction of the graded contracts aligns with MCA’s earlier efforts to improve the player earnings.

In 2024 MCA had already taken the progressive step by matching match fees offered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Currently BCCI pays ₹40,000 to ₹60,000 per day for Ranji Trophy matches with the depending on a player’s experience.

With MCA matching this amount players will now earn dual match fees from BCCI and MCA.

The overall income of domestic players has significantly improved.
