N Chandrasekaran Steps Down as Tata Sons Chairman
N Chandrasekaran has resigned from his post as the chairman of Tata Sons and has announced that he will not be seeking a second term when his current term comes to an end in February 2027. This move comes in the wake of the forthcoming Tata Sons AGM, which will take place on August 18, 2026. He has mentioned in his resignation letter that he has requested the board to start the process of succession as soon as possible to ensure a seamless transition.
The reason behind N Chandrasekaran’s resignation lies in the fact that he could not get a unanimous support for an extension of his term beyond February 2027.
As per N Chandrasekaran, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust have unanimously decided to extend his tenure for another five years.
After considering the proposal, Nomination and Remuneration Committee of Tata Sons Board and the board itself deliberated upon it.
When the proposal was put up for the consideration to the Tata Sons Board on February 24th, 2026, it could not receive the unanimous support. Hence, the decision was deferred by him.
N Chandrasekaran started his career at the Tata Group in the year 1987.
He served as CEO and MD of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) from 2009 and chairman of Tata Sons since 2017.
Under his leadership, the Tata Group made significant expansion into various industries such as technology, automobile, steel, aviation, defence, electronics, and semiconductors.
Under Chandrasekaran’s chairmanship, Tata Group also had to deal with various challenges facing different Tata Group companies. These include the turnaround of Air India, challenges facing the information technology industry and the cybersecurity challenge faced by Jaguar Land Rover.
Chandrasekaran’s decision comes against the backdrop of differences that had been brewing between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts.
These differences involve issues ranging from representation on the board, strategic direction of the group and the proposed departure of the minority shareholder, Shapoorji Pallonji Group.
Tata Trusts is one of the key shareholders in Tata Sons and therefore the decision of the leadership of Tata Trusts would be critical in relation to the governance of the group.
There have also been reports of differences over the proposed reappointment of Chandrasekaran.
