NABARD Announces National Climate Stack Innovation Challenge

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has launched the National Climate Stack Innovation Challenge. Which is the national initiative designed to strengthen India’s climate resilience architecture in which particularly for rural regions. This challenge has been introduced in collaboration with the Gates Foundation and Dalberg Advisors. This will be aiming to develop technological solutions that integrate climate data for better forecasting and risk management. The competition offers cash awards up to ₹15 lakh for the best innovations.

NABARD Climate Innovation Challenge

The NABARD Climate Innovation Challenge aims to develop a National Climate Stack. Which will serve as a digital framework for integrating and analyzing climate related data across India.

This initiative tries seeks to create a unified system that brings together multiple climate datasets currently scattered across different platforms.

By integrating these data streams the system will enable the better forecasting of climate hazards such as floods, droughts, heatwaves and cyclones.

Need for Unified Climate Data and Forecasting Systems

India faces increasing climate risks due to extreme weather events and environmental changes. This have a direct impact on agriculture and rural livelihoods.

In Now large volumes of climate data are available today the information often remains fragmented across different websites and research platforms.

This makes it difficult for stakeholders to access real-time insights for decision-making.

The National Climate Stack initiative by NABARD aims to solve this challenge by creating interoperable, integrated and forward looking climate intelligence systems that can support better disaster preparedness and agricultural planning.

Innovation Challenge Open for Scientists and Technology Developers

The NABARD National Climate Stack Innovation Challenge invites participation from innovators across India’s scientific, technological and startup ecosystem.

Participants will be required to develop near term climate hazard forecasting models and interactive dashboards that help predict and visualize climate risks effectively.

Submissions will be evaluated on several criteria including,

  • Scientific accuracy and innovation
  • Practical relevance for rural applications
  • Transparency and explain ability of models
  • Interoperability with existing systems
  • Scalability for national implementation

The challenge aims to identify innovative solutions that can strengthen India’s climate risk management systems.

Prize Awards and Implementation Opportunities

The Climate Innovation Challenge launched by NABARD offers financial rewards for the top performing solutions.

The prize structure includes the,

  • ₹15 lakh for the first prize
  • ₹10 lakh for the second prize
  • ₹5 lakh for the third prize

DiCRA Platform and Climate Data Infrastructure

The National Climate Stack Innovation Challenge is anchored in DiCRA (Data in Climate Resilient Agriculture which is the  NABARD’s climate data platform.

DiCRA currently functions as a digital platform for collecting and analysing climate data related to agriculture and rural ecosystems.

Through this initiative NABARD aims to transform DiCRA from a digital public good into a full digital public infrastructure which is capable of supporting real time climate intelligence.

This transformation will enable better integration of climate data with forecasting systems, helping governments and farmers make informed decisions.

Collaboration With Global Partners

The NABARD climate initiative is being implemented with support from the Gates Foundation and the Dalberg Advisors.

These organizations are acting as strategic partners in designing and implementing the challenge.

Their involvement brings global expertise in technology innovation, climate policy and development strategies.

The collaboration aims to strengthen India’s efforts to build a modern climate data infrastructure that supports sustainable agriculture and rural development.
