NAMASTE Day 2026: Ministry to Celebrate 3rd Anniversary in Kolkata, Honouring India’s Sanitation Workers

On 14th of July, 2026, India is set to observe 3rd NAMASTE Day, with this it marks three years since the launch of the National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) Scheme. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment will lead the nationwide celebrations with the main event taking place at the Rabindra Sadan in Kolkata, West Bengal. The observance of the day recognizes the invaluable contribution of sanitation workers along with reinforcing the government’s commitment to safer, mechanized, and dignified sanitation services all across the country.

What Is NAMASTE Day?

NAMASTE Day is an annual observance dedicated to recognizing and honoring the sanitation workers, including the

  • Sewer workers
  • Septic tank workers
  • Waste pickers
  • Former manual scavengers

This day acknowledges their essential contribution to the public health, environmental cleanliness and urban sanitation along with promoting the awareness about their rights, safety and welfare. The 2026 celebration marks the third anniversary of the NAMASTE Scheme, which was launched during the 2023-24 financial year.

Main Celebration to Be Held in Kolkata

The main celebration of the NAMASTE Day 2026 will be organized at the Rabindra Sadan, Kolkata, alongside with the Divya Kala Mela, and similar programs will be conducted by the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across India.

This event is expected to witness participation from,

  • Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Dr. Virendra Kumar
  • West Bengal Chief Minister Shri Suvendhu Adhikari (expected)
  • Members of Parliament
  • MLAs
  • Senior Central and State Government officials
  • District administration representatives
  • National Safai Karamcharis Finance & Development Corporation (NSKFDC)
  • Other dignitaries and sanitation workers

The nationwide observance also reflects the government’s focus on to ensuring the dignity, safety and social inclusion for the sanitation workers.

Activities Planned Across the Country

Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) will also organize a range of welfare-focused activities that are designed specifically for the sanitation workers.

Key initiatives includes the,

  • Occupational safety and awareness training
  • Health check-up camps
  • Distribution and facilitation of government welfare benefits
  • Demonstrations of mechanized sanitation equipment
  • Awareness sessions on the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Recognition and felicitation of sanitation workers for their public service

These program are also aim to improve workplace safety, along with increasing access to the welfare schemes and modern sanitation technologies.

What Is the NAMASTE Scheme?

The National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) is a flagship initiative which launched by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment in the financial year 2023-24.

This scheme seeks to transform the sanitation work in India by replacing the hazardous manual practices with safe, technology-driven and mechanized sanitation services.

Its broader objective is to improve the social, economic and occupational well-being of the sanitation workers while ensuring that sanitation work becomes safer and more dignified.
