Narendra Modi Becomes India’s Longest Continuously Serving Elected Prime Minister
Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi has achieved the yet another historic milestone in his political journey in 10th of June, 2026. As on 10th of June he completed 4,399 consecutive days in office and he surpassed the record of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru and became the country’s longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister. This achievement showcases his popularity, electoral dominance and strong leadership over more than a decade.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi first assumed the office on May 26, 2014 after leading the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the decisive victory in the Lok Sabha elections.
On 10th of June, 2026 he will completed the 4,399 uninterrupted days as Prime Minister and overtaken the Jawaharlal Nehru’s record of 4,398 consecutive days served after being elected via general elections.
Nehru held the office continuously from May 13, 1952 until his death on May 27, 1964 which make his tenure one of the longest in democratic history.
One of the defining features of the Narendra Modi’s political career has been his consistent electoral success.
He became the first non-Congress Prime Minister to complete the two consecutive full-majority terms in the office.
Additionally, he is the first Prime Minister since the Jawaharlal Nehru to win three straight Lok Sabha elections as the incumbent leader.
The BJP had secured the victories in the year like 2014, 2019, and 2024 general elections under the Modi’s leadership and reinforced his position as one of the India’s most influential political figures.
This is not the first major milestone broken by Narendra Modi during his tenure.
Last year in July he surpassed the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s uninterrupted tenure record of 4,077 days.
Indira Gandhi had served continuously from January 24, 1966 to March 24, 1977.
Earlier in the March 2026, Modi became the longest-serving head of the an elected government in India.
He overtook the former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling by completing the 8,931 days in elected executive office as combining his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister and Prime Minister.
Narendra Modi began his tenure as the Chief Minister of Gujarat in the October 2001.
After serving the state for more than 12 years, he led the BJP to the historic victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and became Prime Minister of India.
His political journey reflects the one of the longest and most successful leadership careers in the history of independent India.
Despite the surpassing Former PM Nehru in terms of continuously elected service, Jawaharlal Nehru still holds the record for the overall tenure as Prime Minister of India.
Former PM Nehru served total of 6,131 days and led the country from August 15, 1947, until May 27, 1964.
Therefore, PM Modi will become the longest continuously serving elected as Prime Minister, Nehru remains the India’s longest-serving Prime Minister overall.
