NASA’s MAVEN Mars Orbiter Lost Communication With Agency

The US space agency NASA has lost contact with its long serving Mars orbiter MAVEN, raising concern within the global scientific community. The spacecraft which has been orbiting Mars since 2014 then went silent in early December. NASA trying efforts for the re establish communication with the satellite.

Loss of Contact: What Happened?

On December 4 MAVEN transmitted its last full set of routine health data. Two days later, it passed behind Mars from Earth’s viewpoint  a normal blackout period.

However, when the spacecraft was expected to reconnect,

  • NASA’s Deep Space Network did not detect MAVEN’s signal
  • NASA publicly confirmed the issue on December 9
  • A small fragment of tracking data recovered later suggested unexpected rotation and a possible change in orbit

The exact cause of the problem is still unknown.

What Is the MAVEN Mission?

MAVEN stands for Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution. The mission was launched by NASA in November 2013 to study how Mars lost most of its atmosphere over billions of years.

Its main task has been to,

  • Study Mars upper atmosphere and ionosphere
  • Observe how sunlight and solar wind interact with the planet
  • Help scientists understand how Mars changed from a water-rich planet to a cold, dry world

Why MAVEN Is Important

Key Roles of MAVE,

  • Acts as a communication relay for Mars rovers
  • Relays data from Curiosity and Perseverance rovers back to Earth
  • Collects long term atmospheric data across different seasons and solar conditions

With MAVEN silent, NASA has shifted relay duties to other orbiters like,

  • Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter
  • Mars Odyssey
  • European Mars orbiters, when needed

Background of MAVEN and India’s Mangalyaan

MAVEN reached Mars orbit in September 2014 just days after India’s Mars Orbiter Mission, popularly known as Mangalyaan, arrived.

The two missions were often compared, but they had different goals,

  • MAVEN: A dedicated, long-term science mission
  • Mangalyaan: A technology demonstrator with basic scientific instruments by Indian Space Research Organisation

MAVEN was designed for a two-year mission but has operated successfully for over 10 years.

Key Takeaways

  • NASA has lost contact with the MAVEN Mars orbiter
  • The spacecraft went silent in early December 2025
  • Data suggests unexpected rotation and possible orbit changes
  • MAVEN has studied Mars atmosphere for over a decade
  • Backup orbiters are handling rover communication duties
