National Sports Day 2026: Why India Celebrates August 29

National Sports Day in India observed annually on August 29 in order to pay tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, one of the most outstanding sportsmen of all time, on his birth anniversary. This day also commemorates India’s sporting traditions and encourages people to engage in physical exercises and sports. Since its establishment in 1995, this holiday has grown into a more general celebration of health and sports awareness. In 2026, this holiday is celebrated from August 28 till August 30 and carries a slogan “Tribute, Play and Move”, as there will be organized sport events and health campaigns dedicated to Indian sports idols.

Why National Sports Day Is Celebrated on August 29?

August 29 is the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand born in 1905. “The Wizard of Hockey” played a significant role in shaping India’s era of success in international hockey.

Major Dhyan Chand was a member of the teams which gained Olympic gold medals in Amsterdam in 1928, Los Angeles in 1932 and Berlin in 1936. At Berlin Olympics in 1936, he captained the Indian team, which beat the German team by the score of 8-1 in the final match.

Dhyan Chand joined the Army in 1922 and began his international career in the 1920s. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956.

How did National Sports Day Transform into a Fitness Movement?

However, National Sports Day is no longer about celebrating the sporting feats anymore. It is now about promoting physical activity and healthier living in general.

On August 29, 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Fit India Movement in New Delhi. It was aimed at making people more fit and making physical fitness part of their daily life routine.

It was aimed at increasing the awareness of fitness in schools, colleges, universities, villages, and panchayats. At the same time, participation in sports, including traditional Indian games, should be encouraged.

National Sports Day is also associated with India’s National Sports Awards, including the Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award, and the highest Indian sporting award.

Is Hockey India’s National Sport?

Despite a long and glorious history of India in Olympics hockey, hockey is not India’s national sport.

The Indian government stated back in 2012 in the Parliament that it has never officially bestowed the “National Game” status on any sporting discipline. The term “national game” is associated with hockey because India has a great track record in this game.

However, India’s top sporting award is named after the great hockey player. On August 24, 2021, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award became known under a new name – the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.

Theme and Celebrations for National Sports Day 2026

The theme chosen for National Sports Day 2026 is “Tribute, Play and Move”, and it is being celebrated from 28th August to 30th August 2026 as a three-day campaign across the nation.

The campaign involves paying tribute to sporting legends along with sporting activities and fitness campaigns. Institutions such as schools, sporting bodies and other establishments are running programs to motivate people to play, move and live healthy lives.

As a result, the celebrations in 2026 would extend beyond the legacy of Major Dhyan Chand. Participation of children, youth and the general public in sports activities would be one of the main focuses of this year’s celebrations.

Olympic Legend Dhyan Chand

Major Dhyan Chand has been known to represent the best period of India’s Olympic Games. The country won six consecutive gold medals at the Olympics in hockey from 1928 to 1956, with Dhyan Chand contributing greatly in the first three of them.

It has been said that he scored more than 1,000 goals during his active years which lasted from 1926 to 1948. However, these statistics were not documented like modern international sporting statistics.

Apart from his goal-scoring ability, his contributions to India’s rise as one of the top hockey teams around the world should not be underestimated.
