Navratri 2025 Colours with Dates, Tithi, Rituals & Significance

Navratri, also known as Shardiya Navratri, is one of the most auspicious Hindu festivals, celebrated with devotion across India. The nine days symbolize the battle between Goddess Durga and the demon Mahishasura, culminating in the victory of good over evil on the tenth day, Vijayadashami (Dussehra). In 2025, Navratri will be celebrated from Monday, 22 September to Wednesday, 1 October, concluding with Vijaya Dashami on 2 October 2025.

Mythological Significance

  • Durga and Mahishasura: Navratri marks the nine nights when Goddess Durga fought Mahishasura, defeating him on the tenth day.
  • Lord Rama & Ravana: It is also linked to Lord Rama worshipping Maa Durga before his battle with Ravana, symbolizing victory of righteousness.
  • Uma’s Return: In Eastern India, Navratri coincides with Durga Puja, believed to mark Maa Durga’s homecoming to her maternal abode.

Each day is dedicated to one Navdurga form, representing unique virtues,

  • Maa Shailputri – Goddess of strength and stability
  • Maa Brahmacharini – Symbol of devotion and penance
  • Maa Chandraghanta – Bringer of peace and bravery
  • Maa Kushmanda – Creator of cosmic energy
  • Maa Skandamata – Motherly love and protection
  • Maa Katyayani – Fierce destroyer of evil
  • Maa Kalaratri – Protector from darkness and fear
  • Maa Mahagauri – Goddess of purity and forgiveness
  • Maa Siddhidatri – Giver of spiritual powers and siddhis

Devotees wear specific colours each day to channel divine blessings,

  • Day 1 (22 Sept): Yellow – Joy, positivity
  • Day 2 (23 Sept): Green – Growth, harmony
  • Day 3 (24 Sept): Grey – Balance, calmness
  • Day 4 (25 Sept): Orange – Courage, creativity
  • Day 5 (26 Sept): White – Peace, purity
  • Day 6 (27 Sept): Red – Strength, passion
  • Day 7 (28 Sept): Royal Blue – Prosperity, depth
  • Day 8 (29 Sept): Pink – Love, compassion
  • Day 9 (30 Sept): Purple – Dignity, devotion
  • Day 10 (1–2 Oct): Peacock Green – Uniqueness, intelligence

Rituals During Navratri

  • Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana): Invocation of Maa Durga by installing a sacred kalash.
  • Daily Fasts & Aartis: Devotees observe fasts, perform pujas, and offer bhog.
  • Kanya Puja (Ashtami/Navami): Worship of young girls symbolizing the goddess herself.
  • Garba & Dandiya: Traditional dances in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
  • Durga Puja (Eastern India): Grand pandals, cultural performances, and immersion of idols.
  • Ayudha Puja (South India): Worship of tools, books, and instruments for prosperity.
  • Sindoor Khela: Married women in Bengal apply sindoor to each other on Vijayadashami.
