Neeraj Chopra Honoured as Lieutenant Colonel in Territorial Army

Neeraj Chopra, India’s iconic javelin thrower and two-time Olympic medallist, has added another feather to his cap — he has been conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army. This honour not only recognises his extraordinary sporting achievements but also his embodiment of discipline, dedication, and national pride. The announcement marks a significant moment where Indian defence traditions and sporting excellence intersect.

Neeraj Chopra’s Journey in the Army

Neeraj Chopra’s association with the Indian Army began in August 2016 when he was inducted as a Naib Subedar, a junior commissioned officer. His continuous rise in both sports and military respect saw him promoted to,

  • Subedar in 2021, following his Tokyo Olympics gold medal
  • Subedar Major in 2022, along with the award of the Padma Shri and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, the highest peacetime honour in the Army
  • The newly conferred honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel, effective from 16 April 2025, solidifies his stature as a national icon in both fields.

What the Honorary Rank Means

  • The Territorial Army (TA) is a part-time volunteer force that supports the regular Indian Army. While the honorary rank doesn’t involve active military command, it holds symbolic value.
  • It is awarded to civilians or non-serving personnel in recognition of their exceptional contributions to the nation.
  • The rank was bestowed during a pipping ceremony in New Delhi, attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi.
  • Both leaders praised Chopra for his perseverance, patriotism, and inspiration to youth and the armed forces alike.

National Recognition and Sporting Achievements

Neeraj Chopra’s sporting journey is marked by a series of prestigious honours,

  • Arjuna Award in 2018, for early contributions to athletics
  • Khel Ratna Award in 2021, India’s highest sporting honour
  • Olympic Gold Medal in Tokyo 2020, a historic first for India in track and field
  • World Championship Silver and Gold Medals, reinforcing his status as a global athletics star
  • These achievements have elevated him to the status of a national hero, justifying the rare military honour.

Importance of the Award

This appointment holds significance beyond personal recognition. It underscores,

  • The integration of national pride across sectors, showing how military institutions honour civilian excellence
  • The encouragement for youth to aspire toward discipline, patriotism, and excellence in diverse fields
  • The strengthening of ties between sports and national service, motivating athletes to contribute to nation-building
  • Neeraj Chopra now joins a distinguished list of sports personalities, including MS Dhoni and Abhinav Bindra, who have also been honoured by the Indian Armed Forces with similar ranks.
