Nepal Flash Floods Triggered by Ice and Rock Avalanche
Nepal flash floods caused in Rasuwa on 26th August, 2026, Wednesday have been attributed to an ice and rock avalanche that brought a sudden surge in the river system of the area. In the incident, at least eight persons lost their lives, while several hundred travelers are missing due to the impact of the floods that inundated villages, destroyed roads and hydropower projects.
The Bhotekoshi River experienced flooding at about 9 a.m., which sent massive volumes of water flowing downstream to destroy villages, roads and hydropower facilities.
According to experts, the immediate cause of the flooding was most probably an ice and rock avalanche that occurred in the glacier in Nepal. The avalanche resulted in a massive surge downstream through the Lhende Khola, which is a tributary of the Bhotekoshi River.
The disaster risk specialist, Saswata Sanyal, stated that the Lhende Khola River had flooded twice within 14 months due to ice-rock avalanche that blocked the river.
According to reports, the floods hit Nepal’s Rasuwa district, bordering Tibet, where at least 384 individuals were missing, 291 of whom were foreign tourists from countries such as India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Malaysia.
At least eight people were confirmed dead, and the sudden floods had caused damage to vital infrastructure within the affected regions.
People in several districts were advised to keep off the banks of the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli and Narayani rivers in the event of additional flooding due to the risks involved.
The recent disaster underscores the vulnerability of the entire Himalayan region spanning Nepal, India, and other countries.
The Himalayas are naturally prone to various natural disasters such as heavy rainfall, floods, landslides, and other mountain hazards. Apart from this, climate change poses an additional threat with melting glaciers and sudden risks of water disasters in vulnerable mountainous areas as temperatures rise.
Another example of this was the flood incident that took place in August last year, which resulted from glacial lake outburst in Tibet due to rising temperatures and killed nine individuals with damage being inflicted on significant infrastructure including the bridge between Nepal and China.
Moreover, accelerating glacier loss has been noted across Hindu Kush Himalaya with the rate of glacier loss being higher since 2000.
It has been emphasized by experts that early warning systems and disaster management are very important in a changing Himalayan climate.
Flash floods caused by avalanches, glacial lake burst, and river blockage could happen within seconds and leave people no time to move out of danger. Effective monitoring of glaciers, rivers, and fragile mountain areas will ensure timely warnings to save lives.
