New Delhi Hosts World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2026: Over 250 Athletes to Compete

The 2nd edition of the World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2026 in New Delhi. And it will take place from March 11 to March 13. In which the bringing together athletes from across the world. The international competition will feature around 257 athletes from eight countries, making it a major para sports event hosted by India. The event is expected to showcase high level performances in various track and field competitions.

Participation of Athletes from Eight Nations

The World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2026 will see participation from athletes representing India, Russia, Nepal, Bhutan, Hong Kong, Serbia, Bosnia and Egypt.

The participation from various countries highlights the expanding international interest in para athletics competitions hosted in India.

India will have the largest contingent with about 219 athletes and they will competing in several events across multiple sport classifications.

The large Indian representation reflects the rapid growth of para sports in the country and increased opportunities for athletes with disabilities.

Top Indian Para-Athletes Competing in the Event

Several well known athletes are expected to participate in the New Delhi World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2026.

Their presence will add excitement and competitiveness to the event.

Among the big names participants are Paralympic gold medallist Mariyappan Thangavelu, Paralympic champion and world record holder Sumit Antil and Paralympic gold medallist Praveen Kumar.

These athletes have previously brought international recognition to Indian para athletics.

Apart from leading Paralympic champions, the World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2026 will also feature other talented Indian athletes who have performed strongly in international competitions.

The Indian lineup includes Ajeet Singh, Devendra Singh Gurjar, Asian Para Games medallist Ankur Dhama, T12 sprinter Simran, and Preeti Pal who made history by winning two bronze medals at the Paris Paralympics 2024 in the women’s 100m and 200m T35 events.

Importance of Classification Opportunities

The one significant features of the New Delhi World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2026 is the availability of 74 international classification slots for athletes.

Classification is an important step in para sports because it determines eligibility and fair competition categories.

The slots include 39 for athletes with physical impairments, 29 for athletes with vision impairments, and 6 for athletes with intellectual impairments.

This opportunity will help many Indian athletes confirm or obtain international classification required for major global competitions.

India’s Performance in the Previous Edition

The 1st New Delhi World Para Athletics Grand Prix, held in 2025. In which India deliver an outstanding performance. The host nation finished first in the medal tally and demonstrating the strength of its para-athletics program.

Indian athletes won 134 medals, including 45 gold, 40 silver and 49 bronze medals.

With around 150 Indian athletes participating this event highlighted the depth and potential of India’s para sports ecosystem.
