Mayiladuthurai is a town and district headquarters in the eastern part of Tamil Nadu. It lies 256 km from Chennai, the state capital. It is close to the Cauvery River and is part of the East Coast of Tamil Nadu. The town is well-connected by rail and road, and the nearest airport is Pondicherry Airport, about 116 km away.

Historical Background of Mayiladuthurai

Mayiladuthurai has a rich history and was ruled by many powerful kingdoms:

  • Medieval Cholas were among the first rulers.
  • Later, it was ruled by the Vijayanagar Empire, Thanjavur Nayaks, Thanjavur Marathas and the British Empire.
  • It was once part of the Tanjore district, then became part of Nagapattinam district after 1991.

Mayiladuthurai is also an important religious and cultural town. It has ancient temples like the Mayuranathaswami Temple, which is linked to the story of goddess Parvathi who took the form of a peacock (Mayil) to worship Lord Shiva.
