NHAI Launches ‘Project Aarohan’ for Toll Workers’ Children

In a significant step toward promoting inclusive education and social equity, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched ‘Project Aarohan’ to support the educational aspirations of children of toll plaza employees. The initiative, unveiled in collaboration with Vertis Infrastructure Trust, aims to break financial and social barriers for students from economically weaker and marginalized communities across India.

A Vision for Equitable Education

Launch and Objectives

Launched at the NHAI Headquarters in New Delhi by Chairman Shri Santosh Kumar Yadav, ‘Project Aarohan’ reflects a commitment to those who operate India’s national highways and their families. The project is designed to enable equal access to quality education, particularly for,

  • Girls from low-income households
  • First-generation learners
  • Students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and minority communities

Initiative is not just about education but about nurturing future contributors to India’s growth.

Key Features of Project Aarohan

Implementation and Funding

To be executed by SMEC Trust’s Bharat Cares, the first phase of the project will run from July 2025 to March 2026, with a fund allocation of ₹1 crore. The program structure includes,

  • 500 students (Class 11 to final year graduation) receiving ₹12,000 annually
  • 50 high-performing students pursuing post-graduation or higher studies getting ₹50,000 each

Beyond Scholarships: Holistic Support

The initiative goes beyond financial aid by offering,

  • Structured mentorship programs
  • Skill-building workshops
  • Career guidance and entrepreneurship support

This multifaceted approach is aimed at creating confident, capable, and career-ready individuals.

Ensuring Fair Access and Transparent Selection

Application and Selection Process

The application process will be entirely online, requiring submission of,

  • Academic transcripts
  • Income certificates
  • Caste certificates
  • Valid ID proof

A systematic selection process will be followed to ensure transparency and inclusivity. The project also includes a renewal mechanism for continuous support and progress tracking to ensure that deserving students remain on their educational path.

Building Human Potential Alongside Infrastructure

Partnership for Social Change

The broader vision of the program—building human capital alongside physical infrastructure. By investing in mentorship and education, the project aims to create ripple effects that uplift families, communities, and local economies.

Nationwide Reach

With toll plazas located across India’s extensive highway network, ‘Project Aarohan’ is set to benefit a vast and often overlooked workforce. Its long-term impact lies in equipping students with the tools to transform their futures, empowering a generation that often lacks access to such structured support.
