NHAI OneTag FASTag Portability: Change Banks Without Replacing Your Tag

The process of linking a different bank to a FASTag does not need one to get a new tag anymore. The OneTag FASTag portability service by NHAI is currently available through the Rajmargyatra app, which enables a person to change their issuer bank while keeping the FASTag already installed on their vehicle. This feature went live on September 17, 2026, after the launch of this facility by the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, at Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai.

What is OneTag FASTag Portability?

OneTag is an initiative for FASTag portability that has been made possible through a collaboration between Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and NPCI. The feature enables the user to change their issuer bank for FASTag without having to change their physical FASTag which has been installed on their vehicle.

The current FASTag ID associated with the vehicle registration number does not change once portability is successful. It implies that the physical FASTag can still be used with the newly selected issuer bank.

How to Switch Your FASTag Bank via Rajmargyatra

Portability of the bank is done using the Rajmargyatra mobile application. The steps that should be followed include the following,

  • Log into the application and enter the vehicle registration number to check eligibility.
  • Get a six-digit Mobile Verification Code from the existing issuer bank.
  • Confirm your portability request.
  • Choose a new issuer bank.
  • Complete the KYC and wallet onboarding process.
  • Complete the transfer process with the new issuer.

Once portability is complete, the old issuer shuts down the FASTag wallet account and returns any remaining balance.

Why is OneTag Important for FASTag Users?

It has been observed that there is greater than 98% penetration for FASTag with a total of approximately 13 crore NETC FASTags available in India as per Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

OneTag aims to provide flexibility and make it easier to manage FASTag account. Those users who intend to change the issuing bank don’t have to remove the old one or buy a new FASTag.

It may help in reducing multiple instances of making tag, dispatching, and reissuance of the same.

What is the cooling period for OneTag?

Cooling period is of six months for interoperable FASTag to be ported again. So, users can’t port their account frequently through an issuer bank within a shorter period.

Who Developed OneTag?

OneTag has been developed jointly by IHMCL and NPCI. While the former has been promoted by NHAI, the latter provides technology platform for portability in National Electronic Toll Collection system.
