NIC was started in 1976 by Narasimaiah Seshagiri. At first, it was under the Electronics Commission, then moved to the Planning Commission and now it works under MeitY.

NIC also created NICNET, India’s first government computer network. It helped connect various government departments digitally. NIC has been helping modernize government work, especially during the time of globalization.

What NIC Does?

NIC helps the Central and State Governments in using technology for better services. It supports the planning and running of many projects. These include:

  • Government schemes
  • State-level projects
  • Programs run by District Administrators

Main Work Done By NIC

NIC performs many important tasks, such as:

  • Building ICT Infrastructure: Making computer and internet systems strong and reliable.
  • Capacity Buildings: Teaching and training government staff in IT.

  • Development and Research: Finding better ways to use technology.

NIC Headquarters

NIC’s head office is in new Delhi. It works with:

  • All Central Government Ministries and Departments
  • 36 State Governments
  • Around 708 District Administrators

NIC has offices in every state. These offices work with the state governments to plan and run e-Government and Digital India projects.

NIC also has offices in districts. These offices help in bringing digital services to the local people. They make government work more clear, fast and responsive though digital technology.
