Definition of Ebola Bundibugyo Virus Disease

Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease is a serious infectious disease that can be caused by the Bundibugyo virus, which is one of the five known viruses within the Orthoebolavirus genus capable of causing Ebola diseases in humans. This particular strain of the Ebola virus was discovered during an outbreak of the disease in Uganda in 2007-2008.

Transmission of Ebola viruses may occur due to direct contact with the blood or body fluids of an ill person or contaminated objects. The virus is not transmissible through the air like measles or flu viruses.

The symptoms of Ebola disease can include fever, weakness, muscle pain, headache, and sore throat, then vomiting, diarrhea, rash, and bleeding inside or outside of the body in some cases. As these symptoms might be similar to other infections, testing is required for diagnosis.

There is currently no proven vaccine or treatment of this particular strain of the disease. Management of outbreaks includes early medical care and isolation of people, infection prevention, and control, as well as contact tracing.

Regional Outbreak and WHO Guidelines

The regional outbreak of the virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo occurred on May 15, 2026. Nigeria is the fifth country to experience the presence of the virus after its outbreak declaration by the WHO. In addition, there have been cases reported in Kenya, which are as a result of an imported infection.

The WHO has recommended increased surveillance and preparation in the region by performing safe laboratory tests, skilled clinical and rapid response teams, protective gear, and community involvement. The organization has warned that travel and trading bans should not be imposed on the affected regions because of the outbreak.
