Nuakhai Festival 2025: Odisha’s Harvest Celebration

The Nuakhai Festival 2025, one of the most cherished cultural and agricultural celebrations of Western Odisha, will be observed on 28 August 2025 (Thursday). Celebrated on the panchami tithi of Bhadraba month, a day after Ganesh Chaturthi, the festival symbolizes gratitude for the new rice harvest and the strengthening of family and community bonds.

Meaning and Significance

The word “Nuakhai” comes from two Odia words — “nua” (new) and “khai” (food), meaning eating the newly harvested rice. Traditionally linked to agriculture, the festival,

  • Marks the first consumption of new rice after offering it to the deity.
  • Brings a ray of hope for farmers, symbolizing prosperity and abundance.
  • Serves as a cultural identity for the Sambalpuri region of Odisha, as well as adjoining areas of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.

Rituals: The Nine Colours of Nuakhai

Nuakhai is associated with nine sets of rituals, known as the nine colours of Nuakhai,

  1. Beheren – Announcement of the festival date
  2. Lagna Dekha – Deciding the auspicious lagan (time)
  3. Daka Haka – Inviting relatives and community members
  4. Sapha Sutura & Lipa Puchha – Cleaning and preparing houses
  5. Ghina Bika – Buying essentials for the festival
  6. Nua Dhan Khujha – Finding the new crop
  7. Bali Paka – Offering the harvest to the deity as Prasad
  8. Nuakhai – Eating the new rice after prayers, followed by dance and music
  9. Juhar Bhet – Seeking blessings from elders and exchanging gifts

These rituals highlight the festival’s deep spiritual and communal ethos.

Celebrations Across Odisha

  • Families first offer the new rice to Goddess Lakshmi, praying for prosperity and happiness.
  • Elders distribute the Prasad among family members, followed by greetings, respect rituals, and cultural gatherings.
  • People wear new Sambalpuri attire and engage in folk dances like Rasakeli, Dalkhai, Maelajada, and Sajani, accompanied by traditional music.
  • Migrant Odia communities across India also celebrate the festival, preserving their cultural roots.

Fixing of Nuakhai Date

Historically, Nuakhai was celebrated after the harvest, so the date varied. However, since 1991, the festival has been fixed on Bhadraba Shukla Panchami to ensure uniform celebrations across regions, irrespective of harvest readiness.
