Odisha Ranks 5th in E-Bus Adoption, Plans 1,000+ Fleet

Odisha is emerging as a green mobility leader, ranking fifth in India in terms of electric bus adoption. With 450 e-buses currently in operation, the state plans to more than double its fleet in the coming years as part of its clean transport initiative. This move aligns with India’s broader efforts to promote eco-friendly urban transport under central government support schemes.

India’s Green Mobility Landscape: Where Odisha Stands

As per official data, India currently operates 14,329 electric buses, with the top-performing states being,

  1. Delhi: 3,564 e-buses
  2. Maharashtra: 3,296
  3. Karnataka: 2,236
  4. Uttar Pradesh: 850
  5. Odisha: 450

Odisha has surpassed its eastern neighbors like:,

  • West Bengal (391)
  • Andhra Pradesh (238)
  • Chhattisgarh (215)
  • Jharkhand (46)

These figures highlight Odisha’s leadership in Eastern India on sustainable mobility.

Odisha’s Plan to Scale E-Bus Operations

The Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) agency has spearheaded Odisha’s e-mobility efforts, currently running e-buses in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri. The state now plans to extend services to,

  • Sambalpur
  • Jharsuguda
  • Keonjhar
  • Berhampur
  • Angul

The target: Expand the fleet beyond 1,000 e-buses, making urban transit cleaner and more efficient.

Infrastructure and Commuter Experience Enhancements

To support the expanding fleet, the state is,

  • Installing charging stations at depots and terminals
  • Introducing smart ticketing, including:
  • QR-code payments
  • National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC)
  • App-based ticket booking

These upgrades aim to deliver seamless, dignified, and commuter-friendly urban mobility, said Housing & Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra.
