Onam 2026: History, Significance, Date and All About the 10 Days of Celebrations

The Onam festival of 2026 is being celebrated throughout the state of Kerala through colorful flower decoration, sumptuous feast, cultural shows, and community meetings. It is one of the major festivals of Kerala, celebrated for 10 days from Atham to Thiruvonam.

Thiruvonam this year falls on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. The Onam festival is celebrated in the month of Chingam of the Malayalam calendar, falling between August and September.

Besides the festivity of the celebration, there is a deeper meaning of prosperity, equality, unity and culture of Kerala.

History and Mythological Significance of Onam 2026

According to mythology, the Onam festival relates to King Mahabali. This legendary monarch was known as generous, wise and devoted to his subjects. In particular, during the reign of Mahabali people lived prosperous and happy.

However, as Mahabali’s reputation kept spreading among the gods who were afraid of his rising power and asked for help from Lord Vishnu. Vishnu appeared before Mahabali in the figure of Vamana – a dwarf Brahmin.

Mahabali gave all the lands that Vamana could cover with three steps. In order to accomplish the wish of the king, Vishnu took a colossal size and took possession of the whole earth in one step, and the sky in the other. Mahabali had nothing to give the last step and offered his head.

Vishnu put his foot on the king’s head and sent him to hell. However, appreciating Mahabali’s devotion and generosity, Vishnu gave him the privilege to return to earth once a year.

Traditionally, Onam is related to this annual return of King Mahabali.

Why Is Onam Celebrated?

Onam has its roots as a traditional harvest festival dedicated to prosperity and abundance. Moreover, it serves as an occasion for the reunion of family members who come to their relatives bringing food, taking part in various rites and playing.

This festival is celebrated in all communities regardless of religion or social status of a person, which makes Onam an important part of Kerala culture.

Pookalam is one of the most characteristic rituals of this holiday. It represents a floral design made by the family at home. Each following day of the ten days festival is marked by the addition of more flowers.

Onam 2026: The 10 Days of Onam Celebrations

The celebrations of Onam will commence from Atham and conclude with Thiruvonam, which is the most significant day of the festival.

Day 1 – Atham

• This is the day when the 10-day festival of Onam commences. The first day begins with making Pookalam or the flower carpet outside the house.
• There will also be traditional procession and activities at the temples during this day.

Day 2 – Chithira

• On the day of Chithira, people make bigger and more intricate Pookalam outside their homes. People also start making preparations for the celebrations.

Day 3 – Chodhi

• Chodhi is generally the day when families go shopping for new clothes and other gift items required for the festival.

Day 4 – Visakam

• As the main day, that is Thiruvonam, is approaching closer, people get busier with their preparations. Shopping, plans of cooking and design of the Pookalam will dominate this day.

Day 5 – Anizham

• It is the day of Vallamkali, which is the well-known and popular snake boat race in Kerala.
• There will be competitions between teams that participate in decorated boats accompanied by songs and cheers of the audience.

Day 6 – Thriketa

• There will be more community activities and cultural programme on this day.

Day 7 – Moolam

• On Moolam, people have more complex and colorful Pookalam outside their houses. Besides, families and communities conduct traditional celebrations.

Day 8 – Pooradam

• Traditionally, people make small clay idols named Thrikkakara Appan on this day, symbolizing Mahabali and Lord Vishnu.
• The idol is placed in the middle of the Pookalam.

Day 9 – Uthradam

• This day is called the First Onam. People complete all the last preparations for the celebrations, clean their houses and arrange the necessary ingredients for Thiruvonam.

Day 10 – Thiruvonam

• Thiruvonam is the most significant day of the festival. In 2026, it will be on August 26.
• People gather in their families, visit temples, wear traditional dresses and decorate their houses with Pookalam. Onam Sadhya, the traditional vegetarian dish that is served on a banana leaf, is the main part of Thiruvonam.

Onam Sadhya – What is it?

Onam festival will be complete without Onam Sadhya, which is among the most famous food preparations of Kerala.

It is an elaborate vegetarian feast that comprises many different dishes served on a banana leaf. The dishes include items such as rice, curry, vegetable, pickle, chutney and dessert among others.

Sadhya is not only a meal but a reflection of the spirit of community and festivity associated with Onam.

Pookalam and Vallamkali: Significant Aspects of Onam

There are two aspects of Onam that stand out significantly from among others – Pookalam and Vallamkali.

In Pookalam, colorful flowers are designed in an artistic manner, and this design progressively grows increasingly complicated during the 10-day period.

The other aspect is known as Vallamkali or the snake boat race. In this tradition, long traditional boats race against each other in the backwaters of Kerala.
