Panama Officially Joins International Solar Alliance

In a significant development for global renewable energy efforts, Panama has officially become the 97th member of the International Solar Alliance (ISA). This milestone was announced by Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Panama’s accession underscores the country’s commitment to embracing sustainable energy sources and marks a crucial step in the global march towards a greener future.

Panama’s Commitment to Solar Energy

The formal ratification process was completed in New Delhi, where Panama’s Ambassador Yasiel Burillo presented the Instrument of Ratification to Abhishekifs, the Joint Secretary (Economic Diplomacy) of the MEA. This act signifies Panama’s dedication to working within the ISA framework, joining forces with other member nations to exploit solar energy’s vast potential.

Abhishek Singh, Joint Secretary (ED & MER) at the MEA, expressed gratitude for Panama’s engagement, emphasizing the value of international cooperation in propelling renewable energy advancements.

ISA’s Growing Global Influence

Remarkably, just days before Panama’s joining, Malta was welcomed as the 119th country to enter the ISA fold, according to the MEA. This discrepancy in numbers highlights the dynamic and rapidly evolving nature of the ISA’s membership, which currently counts 116 signatory countries to its Framework Agreement.

The ISA, a brainchild of India and France, aims to mobilize efforts across the globe to increase the use of solar energy and decrease reliance on fossil fuels. This initiative is pivotal in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development.

A Milestone Assembly and Future Prospects

The ISA’s influence and commitment were prominently displayed during its sixth assembly, held at ‘Bharat Mandapam,’ Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. Ajay Mathur, the ISA Director-General, announced that solar investments are projected to reach $380 billion this year, a significant increase from last year’s $310 billion. He also highlighted the ISA’s role in fostering the development of 9.5 GW of solar energy projects worldwide.
