Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committees (DRSCs) are standing committees in Parliament which review the working of certain ministries and departments.
Functions of DRSCs include reviewing the following,
This helps in the detailed review of government policies and expenditures by the Parliament beyond the business of the House.
For instance, the Department-related Standing Committee on Home Affairs reviewed the Demands for Grants for 2026-27 of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.
The standing committees of parliament have played a very crucial role in legislative and executive accountability.
They give an opportunity to the MPs to study the government’s policies and expenditure in much greater detail and also interact with the representatives from ministries, departments, etc.
They can also suggest recommendations to the government. Although such suggestions are not always binding on the government, it is expected that the government will respond to such recommendations.
