Dr. P. Venugopal, the former Director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and a celebrated cardiac surgeon, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2024, at the age of 82. Renowned for conducting India’s first heart transplant and performing over 50,000 heart surgeries throughout his illustrious career, Venugopal’s contributions to medicine have left an indelible mark on the field of cardiac care. His integrity and pioneering spirit made him a revered figure in the medical community.
Born on July 6, 1942, in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, Venugopal graduated from AIIMS, New Delhi, where he pursued his MBBS and advanced degrees in surgery. After completing his training in open-heart surgery in the U.S., he launched the first open-heart surgery clinic at AIIMS in 1974. He became the director of AIIMS in 2003 and played a vital role in establishing the Cardiothoracic Sciences Centre, which became the site for numerous pioneering surgeries, including the first heart transplant in India on August 3, 1994.
Venugopal was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1998 for his significant contributions to medicine. He also co-authored a memoir titled Heartfelt, published in 2023, detailing his pioneering journey in cardiac surgery. Beyond his surgical achievements, he trained over 100 cardiac surgeons worldwide and introduced innovative techniques such as stem cell therapy for heart repair. His commitment to advancing cardiac care continues to inspire future generations of medical professionals.
Dr. Venugopal was cremated at the Lodhi Road Crematorium on October 9, 2024, leaving behind his wife, Priya Sarkar, and daughter, Saiansha Panangipalli. His passing marks the end of an era for cardiac surgery in India, but his contributions will forever resonate in the hearts of those he touched throughout his career.
