Philippines Declares Energy Emergency Amid Iran Conflict: Fuel Crisis Explained
As escalating tensions between the US – Israel – Iran conflict the Philippines has declared a national energy emergency. Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced the move citing an as an imminent danger to the country’s energy supply. The crisis shows how the global conflicts are directly impacting fuel availability and prices especially those energy import dependent nations.
The declaration comes to response the disruptions which caused by the West Asia conflict and it particularly affecting global oil supply chains.
The Philippines are relies heavily on imported fuel and making it vulnerable to price shocks and supply shortages.
Island nation just left the 45 days of fuel reserves the government feared the potential crisis in energy availability. Rising global oil prices are also further intensified concerns, leading to urgent action.
To tackle the crisis Philippine government has taken the several immediate steps.
A special committee has been formed to ensure the smooth supply and distribution of essential goods which are including fuel, food and needy medicines.
Also the emergency powers will allow the government to procure the petroleum products quickly without even enabling the advance payments to secure supply.
Authorities can also act against the hoarding and profiteering.
Further more efforts are underway to procure 1 million barrels of oil to strengthen buffer stocks for the nation.
The energy crisis has already started affecting the daily life. With the rising fuel prices have led to the transport department strikes and protests and the workers are demanding relief measures.
To ease the burden the authorities has introduced subsidies of 5,000 pesos for the transport workers and free bus rides in some areas.
The crisis is associated with tensions rise in West Asia. This region that plays the crucial role in global energy supply. Any disruption within this region affects the oil price and markets worldwide.
Strategic routes like the Strait of Hormuz, in which a large portion of global oil container are passes and it become vulnerable during conflicts.
