PR Sreejesh Announces Retirement After Paris Olympics 2024

Indian hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, a pivotal figure in the sport, has announced that he will retire from international hockey following the Paris Olympics 2024. This decision marks the end of an illustrious career, characterized by significant achievements and a lasting impact on the team.

A Legacy of Success and Leadership

Sreejesh, who debuted internationally in 2006, has played a crucial role in Indian hockey’s resurgence. His career has seen highs and lows, including the team’s failure to qualify for the Beijing 2008 Olympics and a disappointing finish in London 2012. However, his leadership and perseverance were instrumental in India’s impressive performances at subsequent events. Sreejesh captained the team in Rio 2016 and played a key role in securing a bronze medal at Tokyo 2021.

Memorable Achievements and Awards

Throughout his career, Sreejesh accumulated numerous accolades, including gold medals at the 2014 and 2023 Asian Games and silver medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and 2022. He was awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2021 and the Padma Shri in 2017. Sreejesh also won back-to-back FIH Goalkeeper of the Year awards in 2021 and 2022 and has been a part of India’s four Asian Champions Trophy victories.

As Sreejesh prepares for his final Olympics, the Indian team is determined to honor his legacy. The players, including skipper Harmanpreet Singh, have expressed a strong desire to win a medal in Paris, dedicating their campaign to Sreejesh. The goal is to secure a podium finish for the first time in 52 years and to make Sreejesh’s final tournament a memorable one.
