Praggnanandhaa Becomes First Indian to Win Norway Chess 2026 Title

India’s young chess prodigy Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa became the first Indian ever to win the prestigious Norway Chess tournament. The 20 year old Chennai born player produced the brilliant performance in the final round and defeated the Germany’s Vincent Keymer  to claim the prestigious title. His victory is landmark achievement as even the legendary players like Viswanathan Anand and reigning World Champion D Gukesh had never won the tournament.

Praggnanandhaa Creates History at Norway Chess 2026

Praggnanandhaa entered the final round in to the third position with 15 points but delivered in under pressure situation when it mattered most.

It is a classical victory over the Vincent Keymer earned him the three crucial points and taking his total to 18 points and helping him to secure the championship.

This victory made him the first Indian player to win the Norway Chess title which is one of the most prestigious events in world chess.

American Grandmaster Wesley So led the standings with the 15.5 points before the final round.

However, his classical game against the Alireza Firouzja have ended in a draw and it leading to an Armageddon tie-break.

Although the Wesley So won the tie break and added 1.5 points to finish on 17 points but it was not enough to surpass the Praggnanandhaa’s winning tally of 18 points.
